Getting ready to read in autumn/fall
As the evenings get darker and cooler we begin to smell the familiar wood smoke as cottages in the village turn to their fireplaces for comfort. I am preparing for those longer afternoons by getting my autumn/fall picture books basket ready (including living books from a Charlotte Mason education).
This post will take a peek inside the books which have become our autumn/fall favourites over the years. These books are enjoyed by our whole family but I would especially recommend for 3-6 year olds because of the amount of illustrations and readable text.
10 Autumn/Fall Picture Books Recommendations
My first three books are some of my autumn/fall favourites. These are all small books which a little child can easily hold in their hand.
1.The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin by Beatrix Potter
2. The Tale of Twinette the Spider by Pat Wynnejones (this is a harvest time story based on one of Margaret Gatty’s Parables of Nature from Charlotte Mason curriculum)
3.Autumn Story by Jill Barklem. Beautiful seasonal illustrations which will really help with nature study because of the details of British wildlife.
This next one is one of my absolute favourite autumn/fall picture books. The illustrations of autumn leaves and pumpkin fields are just beautiful. It might seem strange to sing an old song about a fox (the book is the words of a song) but I love it because it has such a cosy, autumnal feeling about it!
4. The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night by Peter Spier
5. The Jumble Bears by Molly Brett is a vintage book which is normally easy to find second-hand (in the U.K). There are several other lovely autumn stories by this author.
6. Molly’s Supper by Jill Dow. This book is worth finding second-hand because it is a lovely going home tale of a cat on an autumn evening.
7. The Bear’s Winter House by John Yeoman &Quentin Blake. A fun story about animals getting ready for the winter.
8. Plum Tree Cottage by Elaine Mills. A dolls house story with a very cosy cottage. It is another lovely book to find second-hand if you can.
9. Sam Vole and his Brothers by Martin Waddell. A nice family story about appreciating your brothers!
10. A House in the Woods by Inga Moore. This is my other absolute favourite because it is a beautiful, cosy story about friends building a house.
I hope you have enjoyed seeing my autumn/fall picture books for 2021 because I have so enjoyed sharing them with you!
