As the smell of wood smoke fills the air, and evenings begin to be full of candlelight, nothing suits village life better than a natural autumn wreath on our front door. To make this wreath I simply went for a walk with my children and gathered bits from the countryside, along with a few leaves and acorns which I knitted. Here are my tips for your very own natural autumn wreath:
- Choose a rustic style plain wreath as your base for this project. These are available in craft shops, but you could also try making your own using some bendy twigs from the garden or park.
- If you would like to add a crafted element, do this now before adding your natural bits and pieces. This is a great way project for knitting and crochet beginners. You could look online for instructions for simple leaves, toadstools, acorns, or whatever you like. I knitted some leaves and acorns in autumnal colours. Add these to your wreath (sew on, or use hot glue gun)
- Take a walk in the countryside or park. Observe the leaves and berries. There may also be some beautiful dried grasses and flower heads. Look around for different shapes and textures. You may also find some of these things in your own garden. Gather the things you love for your wreath.
- Simply poke the natural elements into your wreath securely.
- Add a ribbon which suits your autumnal wreath. You could also choose something more rustic like a hessian ribbon, or a lovely vintage style lace. Then hang up to create a seasonal welcome!
Variations for the natural autumn wreath
This wreath is supposed to represent your own favourite colours and textures for autumn and fall. So of course you can make any substitutions for things you love – paper craft leaves, miniature pumpkins, wheat or corn, linen fabrics. the options are endless!
I hope you enjoyed these tips, and that making this lovely wreath in your own style and location helps you to connect with the wonderful season of autumn.
