If you are interested in home birth, or trying to decide on your options, this post will give you ideas of what a great home birth is like. Please remember this is not a medical post, and there are sometimes reasons why a home birth is not possible in a particular pregnancy.
1. Home Birth is Personal
Everything about a home birth is personal. It is in your home, and the care you are given will obviously be personal to you. There are no other people needing the attention of the midwife, and you won’t be waiting on a long list for a bed, a room, a response to a call.
2. Your familiar Surroundings
One of my favourite things about my home birth was being amongst my familiar things and people. I could look at my paintings on my bedroom walls, I was in my own familiar bed, and it was all so comforting to be at home. Hospitals can provide a great service but they just can’t make you feel at home.
3. Simple
My home birth was very simple. There were not loads of complicated options. I had no options of pain relief. So I knew I was going to just focus and get on with a natural birth. If everything is straight forward this can be a real blessing.
4. Calm
Labour in a hospital is not always a calm experience. In one of my labours I could hear a woman screaming in the next room. During my labour at home I was able to experience complete quiet, and I felt calm because I was in my home.
5. Not as much Medical Focus
I didn’t feel overwhelmed by scary medical equipment. There were not machines peeping everywhere and the monitoring was more minimal. The focus of me and the midwife was more on allowing my body to do what it was naturally doing without intervention.
6. Natural Focus
Knowing the strength and power of the female body, and seeing it in practice is just incredible. This tends to be a real focus of a home birth.
7. Family Friendly
Having my family close when I had my home birth was such a huge benefit. My husband was able to take the new baby through to show the children only moments after he was born. This was a really special memory for me.
8. Restful
I have found it really hard to rest in hospital before and after giving birth. The lights, other babies crying, and the strange surroundings can make it hard to relax. But with my home birth I was in bed in a quiet house by 9pm!
9. Independence
If independence is an important value to you during labour, this is certainly something you can expect to experience when not giving birth at hospital.
10. Joy!
Whether your birth ends up being at hospital or at home, there is so much joy! My experience has been that you can have a beautiful, positive experience in either setting.
