Birth is such a miraculous experience, and it seems to be different each time. After five children (four completely natural births, one with a hormone drip) , I still don’t seem to have found any rules, but I can share with you what I have learned about the beautiful process of natural birth. Please remember that this is not medical information, just my experience shared from one mama to another.
10 Things to know about Natural Birth
1.Ride the Wave
So many people talk about labour as a series of waves, but its true! If you can visualise riding a powerful wave, it really helps you to interpret the experience (which can feel strange and frightening). The pain comes and goes, comes and goes, all the while making progress towards that lovely baby!
2.Using your Mind
Your mind is very important in a natural labour. This is why many women use birth affirmations or scriptures during their natural birth experience. You can remind yourself of things which help you to keep going, relax, and be peaceful, even in the middle of giving birth.
3.Trust your body
The female body is a wonderful thing, designed to be able to bring children into the world. Women have been having babies for centuries and centuries. Your body is capable of far more than you can imagine.
4.Courage is Necessary
There are several crossroads during a natural birth when you could panic, and courage is required to stay calm and focused.
5.Use Natural Remedies to your advantage
Many women find the natural pain relief of water warm water very helpful. Others use favourite essential oils to help them relax. Do some research about some things which might help you in your birth experience.
6.Don’t Panic
Pain can be frightening and overwhelming. I have heard someone describe their natural birth as a strong feeling of power and pressure. This is helpful because it puts the pain into a category where it is doing something useful – bringing your baby into the world! It is so important to stay calm, if you are stressed and screaming its very hard to focus and do the job well.
7.Save your Energy
You can actually spend plenty of time relaxing during labour. Take every moment between contractions or pushes to completely relax your body, refocus, and let your body save up energy for the final moments.
8.The Baby is Coming!
The closer you get to birth, the more this thought can inspire and motivate you. After all this waiting, you are now almost there and can look forward to meeting your baby.
9.Benefits of Feeling Everything
It isn’t a bad thing to feel your body at work during natural childbirth. With many kinds of pain relief you will lose all sense of feeling what your body is doing. Its hard but good to be able to feel what you are doing when you are pushing the baby down the birth canal.
10.Sense of Achievement:
Obviously there is amazing sense of achievement with every birth (and sometimes things don’t work out exactly as planned!), but there is a particularly special feeling about a natural birth, knowing that your body has accomplished this incredible thing.
